Aston Villa are set to be relegated from the Premier League this season, along with two of Newcastle United, Norwich City and Sunderland, so we’ve looked at who might be worth keeping in the top flight next year from their respective squads.
It’s never easy picking through squads that are destined for the drop, but there have been some decent individual positives, despite their dismal team performances.
West Brom have had a decent season and with Premier League survival secured at such an early stage, many Albion fans will be hoping the club can kick on and focus on progressing, rather than concentrating on fighting off relegation each season.
To do this, summer additions will have to be made and with funds not exactly free-flowing at Albion, looking at some players who could be available at a decent price seems a sensible thing to do.
You probably won’t agree with all of the ten players we’ve listed but they will all provide exceptional value if their respective teams enter the Championship.
Jermain Defoe
Defoe’s goalscoring record is outstanding and if Sunderland do go down, he’d be a great addition for Albion.
Micah Richards
Tony Pulis likes big, strong, physical players all across his back four, so Richards fits that model.
He’s a threat from set pieces too due to his amazing leap.
Georginio Wijnaldum
The Dutch midfielder has been one of the few bright spots for Newcastle this season.
He will add goals from midfield and possesses the quality to break down defences in tight games.
Jack Grealish
Grealish is clearly a talented player, he just needs to mature a bit and Pulis could be the perfect manager to keep him in line.
Jonjo Shelvey
The England international is one of the better passers in the Premier League and could be a quality addition to the squad.
He’s got ambitions of playing regular international football, so he won’t want to be playing in the Championship.
Nathan Redmond
The winger was once tipped as a future star, although he seems to have faded away this season.
He’s a talented player with an eye for goal and would be a useful addition for the Baggies.
Andros Townsend
Townsend was linked with West Brom before he made the move to St James’ Park.
He’s another player with international ambitions so he too will want to stay in the top flight.
Duncan Watmore
Watmore’s rise from non-league to Premier League has been a quick one and it’s easy to see why.
He’s still very raw but his ability is clear to see and when he develops, he could be a star player.
Adama Traore
Born and bred at Barcelona’s La Masia, Traore has proven to be one of the league’s most dazzling young wingers when given an opportunity.
Steven Naismith
The Scottish forward isn’t the most technically gifted footballer, but he’s very intelligent and often finds space to play.
He wouldn’t be a starter at Albion, but he’d be a useful squad player.
