Saido Berahino put into weight-loss programme
Just 18 months ago, Saido Berahino had emerged as possibly one of the next truly great English talents in the Premier League after netting 20 goals in all competitions during his breakthrough season.
Since the start of the 2015/16 season, however, the 23-year-old has only found the net on seven occasions in 40 appearances and has fallen down the pecking order at the club.
£20m moves to Tottenham, Crystal Palace and Stoke have been touted and since cast aside with West Brom eager to keep hold of the striker who becomes a free agent after this season.
Berahino hasn’t featured for West Brom in their last four Premier League outings and has now been placed on a weight-loss programme by the club, the Express and Star have revealed.
The striker is reported to have been 8lbs overweight prior to the international break at the start of the month and the club are working hard to get him into ideal match shape.
This isn’t a work ethic issue for Saido, though. He has a well-documented slow metabolism that the Baggies are aware of and try to manage, but the striker does struggle to keep in optimum shape when he’s not playing regular football.
Berahino is eager to continue working hard on the training field and get into shape so he can not only help West Brom now but prove to any potential suitors that he’s still a proven goalscorer at this level.
Tony Pulis has always been a fan of Saido’s play but doesn’t particularly care for his attitude. The flourishing partnership between Salomon Rondon and Nacer Chadli is perhaps making Berahino expendable at the Hawthorns.
