West Brom are in the market for a new centre-back and according to reports in Portugal, cited by Sport Witness, they’ve made an approach for Benfica’s Jardel.
According to the report, the Portuguese side rejected the approach almost immediately but he does have a €20m release clause that Albion could trigger if they chose to do so.
Benfica are expecting to lose Victor Lindelof this summer, with a move to Manchester United possibly on the cards and as such, they’d like to keep Jardel.
What is interesting is the player’s age. Albion are apparently looking to reduce the average age of the squad and if that is the case, spending such a large fee on a 31-year-old seemingly goes against that particular policy.
Benfica potentially see Jardel as a future captain but they won’t be able to stop him leaving, if he wishes to do so, if Albion trigger his release clause.
