West Brom fought bravely against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at the Hawthorns on Saturday, but couldn’t do enough to salvage a draw.
In an action packed first 15 minutes Manchester City went ahead after Leroy Sane opened the scoring with just 10 minutes on the clock. Within five minutes, West Brom had equalised through Jay Rodriguez and gone behind again with Fernandinho finding the back of the net.
The game ended 3-2 and despite West Brom’s best efforts the Baggies finished the game with nothing to show for it.
We’ve handed out some player ratings following the game.
Ben Foster - 6
Did well to keep the scoring to just three. May feel he should have done better for the second goal.
Allan Nyom - 4
Nyom struggled to deal with the inform Sane and should’ve done better to stop the first goal.
Gareth McAuley - 6
Did well with all things considered. Clear to see that this was his first Premier League start of the season.
Ahmed Hegazi - 6
Should have done better to close down Fernandinho for the second goal, gifting the Brazilian all too much room.
Jonny Evans - 5
The defender tried to keep things simple at the back but was booked early on.
Kieran Gibbs - 6
Did the job that was asked of him and limited City’s threat out wide to some extent.
Grzegorz Krychowiak - 6.5
Didn’t stop working throughout the game and tried to keep the Baggies in the game.
Jake Livermore - 6
He was given a clear job to try and harry the City midfield but a lack of quality was telling.
Gareth Barry - 7
Showed his class with a brilliant pass to unlock the City defence for Rodriguez’s goal.
Jay Rodriguez - 7
Looked very dangerous throughout the game and got into some great positions. The forward was rewarded with a deserved goal.
Salomon Rondon - 6
Put himself about and tried to impose himself on the City defence but there was a lack of quality in the final third.
Hal Robson-Kanu - 5
Gave the Baggies something different going forward but struggled to get into the match.
Matt Phillips - 6
Did well to get a goal late on as the Baggies tried to get back in the game.
James McClean - 5
Put himself about in the last 10 minutes but didn’t do a lot aside from that.
