West Brom were left frustrated on Tuesday night as they could only manage a 2-2 draw at home against Newcastle United.
The Baggies knew that this was a must-win game against an out of form Newcastle side but failed to kill the game off, with the visitors netting twice to snatch a draw at the Hawthorns.
Hal Robson-Kanu was given a rare chance to impress, having been named in the starting line-up by caretaker boss Gary Megson. He didn’t disappoint, either, as he netted West Brom’s opener just before half-time.
The Baggies’ lead was extended in the second-half, too, with youngster Sam Field netting his first Premier League goal for the club.
However, it all went downhill from there, as Newcastle clawed their way back into the game. Ciaran Clark netted to reduce the deficit before Jonny Evans could only divert Matt Ritchie’s ball into the box beyond Ben Foster, making it 2-2.
It was a frustrating evening for the Baggies. Here’s how their players rated.
Ben Foster - 7
Made some smart stops, but was helpless to prevent the goals.
Allan Nyom - 6
Solid on the whole, but could have done more to prevent Clark’s goal.
Jonny Evans - 6
Had a bit of a bizarre game. Was efficient on the ball and looked composed but was also partly to blame for both goals.
Ahmed Hegazi - 7
Had a good game. Contributed with some important blocks and looked solid throughout.
Kieran Gibbs - 7
Played a huge part in the opening goal. Had a good game.
Gareth Barry - 6
Didn’t do a lot wrong but barely impacted proceedings. A quiet night for Barry.
Jake Livermore - 7
Much better from Livermore. He showed the necessary grit and steel in the middle.
Sam Field - 8
West Brom’s man of the match. Was full of energy, looked to create on the ball and netted his first senior goal. A great night for Field.
Matt Phillips - 7
Had a good game. Was energetic on the flank and looked to create whenever he was on the ball.
Hal Robson-Kanu - 7
Had a good game and delivered when called upon. Worked relentlessly hard.
Salomon Rondon - 7
Gradually getting his confidence back and performed well, holding the ball up and putting himself about.
Substitutes
Claudio Yacob – 7: Kept things tight in the middle.
James McClean – 4: His only impact was giving away the free-kick that led to the equaliser. Not good.
Grzegorz Krychowiak – N/A: Wasn’t on for long enough to influence proceedings.
