West Brom are trying to sign Rafael Toloi from Italian club Atalanta, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.
The Baggies are looking to rebuild to get back to the Premier League at the first attempt, and are braced to lose a number of defenders like Johnny Evans and Craig Dawson.
The 27-year-old is an integral part of the Serie A side and has helped them finish seventh, a position that will see them enter the Europa League at the second qualifying stage.
Signing from Sao Paulo in 2015, Toloi has played 38 times for Atalanta this season, helping them to the fifth best defensive record in Serie A.
Everton fans will know the centre-back well after he played every minute of both games against them in this season’s Europa League. They beat the Toffees 3-0 at home and 5-1 away on their way to finishing top of the group, but lost to Borussia Dortmund in the last 32.
His performances have stood out in a side that has overachieved for the past two seasons, so Albion fans would be impressed if he signed for the West Midlands club.
Atalanta will be keen not to lose the Brazilian, but the chance to reach the Premier League may prove enough to lure him.
