Reality set in for Darren Moore and his squad when they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Bolton on the opening day of the new season.
If there weren’t any doubts about the challenge the Baggies face this season before kick-off, then the recently-relegated side will be well aware of the challenge that they face in the second tier.
Josh Magennis put Bolton in front on his debut for his new club before Harvey Barnes scored on his competitive debut for the Baggies.
Norwich City loanee Yanic Wildschut scored the winning goal of the game.
Here is how we rated Moore’s men.
Sam Johnstone - 6
Not much he could have done to stop the goals, while also making some decent saves.
Allan Nyom - 6
Offered a lot going forward but the final delivery was lacking.
Kyle Bartley - 5
Bartley and Hegazy playing together in a new central defensive partnership and it showed.
Ahmed Hegazy - 6
Solid enough at the back but should have done better in front of goal after having a couple of chances to find the back of the net.
Kieran Gibbs - 7
Looked a cut above those around him in the second tier.
Matt Phillips - 6
The winger was heavily involved throughout but his final ball was lacking.
Jake Livermore - 5
Struggled to make a mark on the game and failed to impress.
Chris Brunt - 7
Continued in central midfield after an impressive pre-season through the middle.
Harvey Barnes - 8
Impressed on his debut for the club with a goal to kick-start his West Brom career in spectacular fashion.
Hal Robson-Kanu - 5
Did not offer enough in the final third.
Jay Rodriguez - 5
Looked as if the transfer talk was playing on his mind. Could it be his last game for the club?
Oliver Burke – 5, was unable to make much of an impact after coming on.
