Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has admitted that he is keeping tabs on Dwight Gayle, who is on loan at West Brom.
Benitez has hailed Gayle as a great player, despite letting him go in the smmer in order to sign Salomon Rondon.
West Brom and Newcastle completed a swap deal which saw Rondon join Newcastle on loan and Gayle join The Baggies on loan.
Gayle has been a hit at The Hawthorns since his switch, scoring nine Championship goals in 12 starts this season.
The forward has lost his starting place to Hal Robson-Kanu in recent weeks, but has still had an impact off the bench when called upon.
Speaking to The Chronicle, Benitez said this:
For sure. I have said before he was a great player for us in the Championship. He did well in the Premier League too but had injuries.
He is a player that did good things. We know all about his movement and runs behind the defenders. That was really important for us.
Gayle scored 29 goals in 67 league games for Newcastle before joining West Brom, 23 of which came in one season in the Championship for Benitez’s side.
