The Baggies players and interim manager Jamie Sheen’s combined efforts led to an impressive 3-0 victory against Swansea City.
West Brom seemed to play in a 4-5-1 formation with Chris Brunt as captain in the centre of the midfield ensuring players stay in shape. The 34-year-old Baggies veteran also managed to get himself a goal and an assist throughout the course of the game.
The Albion were a different side to what we have seen recently, every player stayed in shape helping to gain possession and create chances as a team, rather than playing the long ball. For this reason, opportunities to score came through Mason Holgate and Conor Townsend delivering threatening balls into the box as well as Harper, Livermore and Rodriguez playing defence-splitting balls into Gayle.
However, there is still much room for improvement. With a bit of luck, Swansea may have been able to win the game as they had 70% possession and tested Johnstone more than enough times to get three or four goals, but it wasn’t to be.
Here’s how we rated the West Brom players:
Sam Johnstone: 10
How he kept a clean sheet I will never know. Made at least five world-class saves. Kept the Baggies on top. Bravo Sam Johnstone, Bravo.
Mason Holgate: 7
Scored a great header. Delivered a few good crosses into the box. Very good game.
Ahmed Hegazy: 8
Very tough defender. Worked hard. Good performance.
Craig Dawson: 7
Good. Solid. Limped off with an injury in the second half.
Conor Townsend: 7
Townsend played fantastic balls into the box to create chances for attacking players to score. Showed potential to be a starting player.
Chris Brunt: 8
Got lucky with the goal, however, he created many chances and lead the team to victory.
Jake Livermore: 7
Did the basics very well. Kept the ball and calmed down play. Good game for Livermore.
Rekeem Harper: 6
An average game for Harper. Could do with some improvement, however, that will come through management and time. Promising.
Jacob Murphy: 6
Went unnoticed, disappointing game. Still has a lot more to offer.
Jay Rodriguez: 7
Well poached goal. Played well in all areas of the field. Good game.
Dwight Gayle: 7
Tested the keeper many times and made himself a problem for defenders. His 17th goal is coming.
