West Brom’s chances of promotion and their season ended on Tuesday as they lost on penalties to rivals Aston Villa in the play-offs.
The Baggies won 1-0 in the second-leg, leaving the score at 2-2 on aggregate and sending the game to penalties – with Villa winning the shootout and booking their place at Wembley later this month.
Despite finishing fourth in the Championship, it was a testing season for the Baggies who had a number of low points during the campaign.
Darren Moore was sacked in March after a string of poor results, including defeats to their promotion rivals Sheffield United and Leeds, and was replaced by Jimmy Shan on an interim basis.
Going into a second season in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League in the 2017/18 campaign, West Brom have a lot of questions that need answering this summer.
Here are ten that they need to address.
Who is the manager?
Perhaps the biggest question West Brom will have to answer this summer. It’s unlikely that Shan will get the job permanently, so who will? The likes of Chris Hughton and Slavisa Jokanovic have already been touted with a move to the Hawthorns.
Will Gayle stay?
Gayle joined last summer on loan from Newcastle in a deal which saw Salomon Rondon go the other way. Judging by how well each of them has done for their respective clubs this season, it would hardly be a surprise for both deals to be made permanent.
Do West Brom look for another Harvey Barnes?
With West Brom now facing another season in the Championship, their funds will become even more limited. The Baggies could look to make use of the loan market to bring in the next Harvey Barnes to light up the division.
Who leaves?
It seems inevitable that West Brom will sell some of their key players this summer. But who goes? Jay Rodriguez? Kieran Gibbs? Ahmed Hegazi? It could be a very tough summer for Baggies fans.
Will Harper sign a new deal?
Academy product Rekeem Harper burst onto the scene at West Brom this season and caught the eye with his impressive performances in midfield. However, he is out of contract this summer and has shown no sign of signing a new deal as of yet. Will he stay and help the club out of the Championship?
Will Burke get a second chance?
Oliver Burke was shipped out on loan to Celtic in January and has scored a few goals for the Scottish giants, but does he deserve a second chance at West Brom? That is a question for the next manager, for sure.
Will any of the other loanees stay?
Aside from Gayle, West Brom have Stefan Johansen, Jacob Murphy, Mason Holgate, Jefferson Montero and Tosin Adarabioyo on loan from other clubs. Will any of them be around next season?
Is a overhaul needed?
This West Brom squad is ageing and lacking energy. It’s fair to say that has been one of the club’s downfalls this season. So, do they undergo an overhaul this summer and revitalise the squad?
Who will be West Brom's main competition next season?
Taking Leeds and Derby out of the equation, who will be West Brom’s biggest competition next season to gain promotion? Swansea? Nottingham Forest? Huddersfield? Fulham? There are some great up-and-coming sides in the Championship.
What are the aims for next season?
If the club does undergo a big change, on and off the pitch, this summer, then where should they be aiming? The club will surely be wanting promotion, but another top-six finish would also be a good achievement.
