West Brom had been linked with a move to appoint Rui Almeida as their new first-team manager, but they have been pipped by SM Caen. 

Following their 19th-place finish in Ligue 1 last season, the French club have begun to prepare for life in the second tier with the appointment of the Portuguese tactician.

Almeida performed well in Ligue 2 last term, leading Troyes to third, but has since moved on to pastures new.

He was touted as a surprise managerial target for West Brom, who have been without a manager since March when they opted to relieve Darren Moore of his duties. 

James Shan took charge until the end of the season but could not lead the Baggies to promotion as they fell short in the play-off semi-finals to Aston Villa.

West Brom will hope to secure the services of a new first-team boss as they bid to push their way out of the Championship again in the 2019/20 campaign.
