West Bromwich Albion picked up their second Premier League win of the season on Saturday, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 at Molineux, but Sam Allardyce can’t rest on his laurels.

The Baggies only kept 32.2% possession, completed just 67% of their passes and had a 51% tackle success ratio against Wolves, so they could do with strengthening their engine room so they can better turn over the ball and control the midfield.

Albion have shown interest in Hamza Choudhury, Clement Grenier, Ben Pearson, Ozan Tufan and Olivier Ntcham, but according to The Mail on Sunday (17/1; page 150) [via TBR Football], Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho is the latest player on their radar.

The 28-year-old joined Real Betis from Sporting Lisbon in 2017 and has gone on to make 71 appearances in all competitions for the Seville outfit. Carvalho was once likened to Patrick Vieira by James McNicholas of ESPN and was a member of Portugal’s Euro 2016-winning squad, but his stock appears to have fallen since then.

He was linked with Arsenal, Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan as recently 2018 but is still in mid-table mediocrity three years later. Carvalho would likely jump at the chance to join a European giant, but is he that keen to sign for relegation-threatened West Brom?

The Portuguese international has two-and-a-half years remaining on his deal at the Estadio Benito Villamarín, so Betis aren’t obligated to cash in early.

Also, would they offload a player who has featured in 14 of 18 league games this season? It’s unlikely, so West Brom might have to turn their attentions elsewhere.
