Kamil Grosicki was expected to leave West Bromwich Albion before the January transfer window closed after falling down the pecking order and being told by Sam Allardyce that he was free to find another club.

The 32-year-old’s proposed move to Nottingham Forest fell through after he turned down their approach and FC Dijon’s interest on deadline day went nowhere, so Albion are now left to pay his wages for the remainder of his contract.

Grosicki’s failure to secure a move away could cost them £40,000 per week until his deal expires on June 30, so he has five more monthly payments of around £170,000 to come – roughly £850,000 in total.

The Polish international has made five appearances in all competitions this season, spending the majority of the campaign as an unused substitute or out of the matchday squad altogher.

Grosicki came into 2020/21 with one goal and three assists in 14 games for West Brom. He has struggled for playing time due to stiff competition from Matt Phillips, Grady Diangana, Matheus Pereira and Callum Robinson as wide options, but he refuses to leave.

With Allardyce leaving Grosicki out of the squad in West Brom’s last two league games, it seems clear that he doesn’t have a future at The Hawthorns.

Now, all the Baggies can do is either terminate his contract or hand over the best part of £1m in barely justified wages for the ostracised Poland winger.
