Matheus Pereira has an uncertain future at West Bromwich Albion as his representatives haven’t responded to the Baggies’ contract offer from a number of weeks ago.

Steve Madeley of The Athletic has said that a deal has been on the table for some time, but Albion are ‘yet to hear’ back from the player’s camp. Madeley also believes that Pereira would prefer a move to another club in one of Europe’s biggest leagues, so this may be the 24-year-old’s last season at The Hawthorns.

In January, it was reported that Pereira wasn’t happy at the club as West Brom are at risk of losing their Premier League status. The Midlands outfit are second from bottom and look destined for relegation, so the Brazilian could end up back in the Championship were he to remain with Albion.

West Brom are in a strong negotiating position, however, as they aren’t obligated to cash in on Pereira just yet, with another three years remaining on his contract. Madeley believes that the Baggies could loan him out and save money on wages if he is unwilling to play in the Championship again.

Pereira scored eight goals and supplied 20 assists in 42 Championship games last season and has had a hand in eight goals from 20 Premier League outings this term (Transfermarkt), so he has been one of the Baggies’ better players in the last 18 months and could attract interest from elsewhere if he is unsettled at The Hawthorns.

If he’s not happy and wants a move, Albion would be brave to keep him, but they wouldn’t have to sell him either as the loan market is an option. His future could hinge strongly on the division in which West Brom are playing their football in 2021/22.
