Sergio Aguero will end his 10-year stay at Manchester City this summer and 90min produced an article ranking the best Argentine players in Premier League history. Claudio Yacob made the list in 15th and was described as ‘exceptional value’ for West Bromwich Albion.
He was an excellent servant for the Baggies between 2012 and 2018 but nearly joined Arsenal before arriving at the Hawthorns. Yacob’s deal was expiring at Racing Club in 2012 and Arsenal were hoping to bring him to the Emirates to bolster their midfield.
Albion won the race for his signature, however, and certainly got their money’s worth. Yacob was a free transfer and went on to make 175 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt). He helped Albion finish in the top-half twice and was named in midfield for the Baggies’ Squad of the Century.
Yacob stood out for his superior ball-winning ability and composure in possession. Players with those two attributes tend to attract bigger clubs, so West Brom considered themselves very fortunate that he was theirs.
And while his career at the Hawthorns ended in relegation, Yacob’s best moments coincided with Albion’s best Premier League campaigns, so he was more than influential.
