On this day in 2013, West Bromwich Albion drew 5-5 with Manchester United and Romelu Lukaku bagged himself a hattrick in front of more than 23,000 supporters at the Hawthorns.
United took the lead through Shinji Kagawa in the sixth minute, converting a Javier Hernandez cross. Minutes later, it was 2-0. Jonas Olsson scored an own goal, steering an Antonio Valencia cross into his own net. United were 3-0 up by the half hour mark. Alexander Buttner rifled a low effort into the far corner after being teed up by Tom Cleverley.
West Brom pulled a goal back before half-time when James Morrison converted a cross from Graham Dorrans and they narrowed the deficit minutes after the restart when Lukaku came off the bench to score with his weaker foot from distance.
United made it 4-2 in the 53rd minute when Robin van Persie finished a Valencia cross and Hernandez bagged their fifth after the hour mark, tucking away a Ryan Giggs cross to open a three-goal lead.
Albion didn’t give up, however. Lukaku bagged a brace in the 81st minute after being put through on goal by Markus Rosenberg and Youssouf Mulumbu made it 5-4 one minute later, scoring from close range after a Billy Jones cutback.
Lukaku then levelled the game in the 86th minute with a header from Mulumbu’s cutback. West Brom, managed by Steve Clarke at the time, finished 8th in 2012/13 with 49 points from 38 games.
