West Bromwich Albion confirmed the signing of Matthew Clarke on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion and the news has been met with positivity on social media.

Supporters are excited that the 24-year-old will accompany Semi Ajayi, Dara O’Shea and Kyle Bartley this season, so Valerien Ismael has plenty of options at centre-back.

Clarke made 175 appearances in all competitions for Portsmouth before joining Brighton in 2019, but he’s yet to feature for the Seagulls.

The defender spent the last two seasons on loan at Derby County (August 2019 – July 2020) (August 2020 – May 2021), making 81 appearances and being named Player of the Year in his first season at the iPro, so Albion have a talented individual.

Ismael has made his second signing since taking charge of the Baggies, first bringing in Alex Mowatt from Barnsley. Albion struggled for goals last season with one player netting more than five in the Premier League, so an attacker might be on the cards this summer too.

Ismael will need a replacement for Charlie Austin and Hal Robson-Kanu who left for Queens Park Rangers and on a free transfer respectively.
