West Bromwich Albion travel to Deepdale Stadium to face Preston North End on Saturday afternoon and are desperate for a win after consecutive low-scoring draws in the Championship.

In their last two games, the Baggies have drawn 1-1 with Millwall and 0-0 with Derby County so Valerien Ismael needs goals. Kevin Phillips believes Jordan Hugill should be given a chance after impressing from the bench recently.

He told West Brom News: “Hugill gave them more of a dimension. He held it up, brought players into play instead of just trying to run in behind all the time like they have been doing.

“It remains to be seen whether he starts the game at the weekend away at Preston. They need someone on that pitch who can get those scrappy goals that can win you the game 1-0. I would start him.”

The 29-year-old joined Albion on a season-long loan from Norwich City and has appeared in their last three league outings – 33 minutes in the 1-0 win over Peterborough United (August 28), 45 minutes against Millwall (September 11), 45 minutes against Derby (September 14).

West Brom started the season strongly with two or more goals scored in each of their first four Championship outings, but they’ve managed only two goals in their last three and haven’t found the back of the net for 131 minutes.

Ismael has started with a front three of Grady Diangana, Callum Robinson and Karlan Grant, but it might be time to give Hugill an opportunity if his trio aren’t firing.

Preston are unbeaten in four ahead of Saturday’s clash, boasting consecutive wins in their last two home games, so they’re no slouches.
