Republic of Ireland comprehensively beat Azerbaijan 3-0 in Saturday’s World Cup European qualifier and Callum Robinson scored two goals while being named Man of the Match. The 26-year-old tripled his goal tally for Ireland in 90 minutes and marked the occasion with a series of picture on his Instagram story.
Robinson had scored one goal in 20 games for the national team prior to the meeting with Azerbaijan, failing to net for nine games over two years. His last goal before Saturday was in Ireland’s 3-0 win over New Zealand on November 14, 2019, so the 26-year-old’s weekend performance had been a long time coming.
Robinson’s first goal on the night came in the 7th minute, firing an effort into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area after fine work on the left from James McClean. His second goal came in the 39th minute, whipping a shot from further out that was deflected past the goalkeeper.
The 26-year-old was named Man of the Match for his performance and will be delighted to end his drought for the national team.
