Sam Johnstone only has months remaining on his deal at West Bromwich Albion and could be on his way out in January amid interest from Premier League clubs. The Sun say the 28-year-old is a transfer target for Southampton, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, so fans on social media are starting to fear the worst.
Johnstone has made 10 Championship appearances this season, conceding seven goals with four clean sheets. He’s also featured three times for England in 2021, shutting out Romania (June 6) and Andorra (September 5) (October 9), so his international career is currently flourishing.
The English shot-stopper continues to be selected for the national team despite playing in the Championship, but his chances of dethroning Jordan Pickford likely won’t improve unless he’s impressing in the Premier League.
No side were willing to match Johnstone’s £15m asking price over the summer, but he’ll be a free agent at the end of the season and therefore more affordable. Where Johnstone will end up next season is anybody’s guess, however, as Southampton and Tottenham could now battle it out for his signature.
