Sam Johnstone is out of contract next summer and isn’t close to putting pen to paper on an extension, so this is likely to be his final season at West Bromwich Albion.

It’s expected the 28-year-old will return to the Premier League after impressing in the last 12 months and Noel Whelan believes Tottenham Hotspur should be the ones to sign him.

Hugo Lloris could be on his way out of Tottenham as his deal is also up in a matter of months. Whelan said Spurs should be looking at Manchester United’s Dean Henderson and Johnstone as a potential replacement.

He told Football Insider: “You’ve also got (Dean) Henderson at Manchester United who wants out. He could be a good replacement for Tottenham. If they’re looking to get an English goalkeeper, you’ve got Sam Johnstone at West Brom. There are a number of good English goalkeepers out there which Tottenham could turn to.”

Johnstone has gone on to make 148 appearances in all competitions since joining West Brom on a four-year deal from Manchester United in 2018, conceding 197 goals and keeping 37 clean sheets.

The England international has been a great servant for West Brom but wants to be playing top-flight which may not be a guarantee if he stayed at the Hawthorns – Albion are eight points adrift of the automatic playoffs and have won just one of their last four league games.

Johnstone also has his international prospects to consider, so playing Premier League football will be important moving forward.
