West Bromwich Albion haven’t been in the best form of late, enduring another goalless draw while being overtaken by Queens Park Rangers in the Championship table, but one player that isn’t letting the side down is Sam Johnstone.
The 28-year-old has made 19 Championship appearances this season, conceding 14 goals and keeping an impressive nine clean sheets, so it’s no surprise he’s attracting interest from Premier League clubs. Kevin Phillips was full of praise for Johnstone recently, calling him “fantastic”.
He told West Brom News: “You know how I feel about Sam Johnstone. Every now and then he might have a mistake in him but generally, his shot-stopping is fantastic. You don’t get in the England squad if you don’t have anything about you and he’s certainly been showing that.
“He’s proven his worth in a time where West Brom can’t be affording to drop points because it looks like the top-two are running away with it at the moment. They’ve dropped points lately but they’re still pulling away so West Brom can’t afford to drop points if they want to challenge.
“Sam Johnstone is an integral part of that and he showed it again against Blackpool.” The 28-year-old has made three appearances for the national team, one of which came last season and two that were this campaign. He’s been in the matchday squad consistency for eight months too, so Johnstone is one of England’s best goalkeepers.
Tottenham Hotspur have been tipped multiple times to sign the Albion stopper if Hugo Lloris leaves at the end of his contract next summer, but West Brom are trying to tie him down to a new deal to no avail. Johnstone will be a free agent in a matter of months and won’t be short of interest.
