West Bromwich Albion are two places and four points adrift of the Championship’s automatic promotion places but have a problem scoring. The Baggies are 7th in the table for goals (31) despite being second for average shots taken per game (16), so they need a prolific striker to be the difference.
Karlan Grant is West Brom’s top scorer on nine goals but has netted only once in eight games while Callum Robinson went four months without registering in the league, so Valerien Ismael brought in Daryl Dike from Orlando City to add more goals. Kevin Phillips believes he could be the difference.
He told West Brom News: “(West Brom) have shown this season they’re as good as anyone in the league on their day. It’s just been a bit inconsistent. Dike coming in will add that fresh impetus, a different dynamic. They can definitely challenge, it’s just whether they can keep everyone fit week in, week out.
“There’s enough firepower. I know they haven’t got that out and out striker who has got them 15-20 goals, but there’s enough in that offensive lineup that can get them goals to challenge the top two. It’s a challenge, but it’s definitely doable.”
Dike looks a good piece of business for £7m. The 21-year-old scored nine goals in 18 Championship games while on loan at Barnsley last season and bagged 10 goals in 18 MLS outings for Orlando City this campaign. He’s been prolific in the last 12 months and is young enough to continue developing, so Dike could be an important player.
West Brom next face Queens Park Rangers and the US international might be making his debut.
