West Bromwich Albion aren’t short of left-backs with Conor Townsend and Adam Reach at their disposal, not to mention Taylor Gardner-Hickman being a makeshift option too, but the Baggies were trying to sign Neil Taylor on a free transfer before the January transfer window shut.

The 32-year-old joined Middlesbrough on a short-term deal in November and would be out of contract in mid-January, but Football Insider say Taylor is set to sign a new deal at the Riverside Stadium, presumably until the end of the season. Fans on social media don’t seem too bothered, however.

Colin Commander: “Why do we need players when we already have LBs. Leave him where he is.”

John Greenhalgh: “Probably another pig in a poke we would have spent money on. Best left alone.”

Matthew Longhurst: “He’s rubbish.”

Ryan Barnes: “Don’t want him anyway. Townsend’s better.”

Luke Aulton: “We got 2 LBs (already).”

Kevin Hennessy: “Thank god (he’s staying at Middlesbrough).”

Taylor was a free agent after being released by Aston Villa over the summer. The Welsh international was in the wilderness for a couple of months before Boro came knocking.

He’s made only two appearances for the Championship outfit, spending the majority of his time as an unused substitute, so West Brom may have thought he’d be available this month.

But Taylor still has a role to play at the Riverside Stadium, even as cover at left-back, so West Brom will have to turn their attentions elsewhere.
