West Bromwich Albion suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, but Matt Clarke was spared criticism as he was one of the few players to perform. Birmingham Live gave Clarke a player rating of 7/10 and fans on social media lauded his contribution.

No player won more aerial duels, made more headed clearances or had more shots on target than the 25-year-old. Supporters believe Clarke was a good acquisition over the summer but say he’s the only one from an underwhelming bunch – Kean Bryan (free transfer), Adam Reach (Sheff Wed), Jayson Molumbu (Brighton & Hove Albion), Alex Mowatt (Barnsley), Jordan Hugill (on loan from Norwich City).

Against QPR, Clarke played for 90 minutes, had 42 touches, won 10 aerial duels, completed 71.9% of his 32 passes, had two shots with 50% hitting the target, made one interception, found a teammate with 50% of his long-range passes, had five clearances and gave away one foul.

The 25-year-old has made 17 Championship appearances this season, amassing 1372 minutes of playing time. He’s been a regular when fit and has limited opponents to one or less goals in 14 games.
