Callum Morton has become a forgotten man at West Bromwich Albion. The 22-year-old progressed through the youth ranks, scoring goals for the U18s and U23s before enjoying goal-laden loan spells to Football League sides, but he’s yet to make an appearance for West Brom at senior level.

Joseph Masi of the Express and Star says Steve Bruce will take a look at Morton this summer after his loan spell at Peterborough United, but it’s hard to see him keeping the striker as he’s not at the level required to challenge for a spot.

Morton scored six goals with one assist from 11 games for the U18s (2016 – 2018) and scored eight goals with five assists from 43 games for the U23s (2016 – 2020). Reserve-team football was eventually beneath the 22-year-old, so West Brom loaned him out to the Football League for competitive action.

Morton had a half-season at non-league Braintree (5 goals from 14 games) in 2018/19 a year after joining Albion, but it was his stints at Northampton Town (8 goals from 12 games), Lincoln City (3 goals from 21 games), Fleetwood Town (7 goals and 5 assists from 22 games) and Peterborough United (0 goals and 1 assist from 7 games) that were more formative.

The 22-year-old racked up a lot of Football League experience and finally had a Championship club willing to take a chance on him this season, but Morton has spent the last three months on the sidelines. His last appearance for United came in February and he didn’t manage a goal in his stint at London Road, so Bruce won’t want him in the squad next season.

Morton has scored just four goals in 25 league games at Fleetwood and Peterborough this campaign, so it’s hard to see him dethroning Daryl Dike, Karlan Grant, Callum Robinson or Kenneth Zohore. Bruce may overlook the striker and loan him out to another side next season, hoping he’ll get more opportunities.
