Steve Bruce is on the hunt for a centre-back this summer but may have to offload one or two existing defenders as he’s overstocked in the position.

West Brom have Matthew Clarke, Semi Ajayi, Kyle Bartley, Dara O’Shea, Cedric Kipre and Kean Bryan who can operate at the back, but Steve Madeley of The Athletic predicts Bartley will be the one who’s sold.

The 30-year-old joined on a five-year deal from Swansea City in 2018 and has gone on to make 145 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals with four assists.

Bartley has an uncertain future at the Hawthorns, however, as he’s out of contract in 2023 and may not be handed a new deal. The former England youth international found playing time sporadic at the tail-end of the season too, so he might be surplus to requirements in Bruce’s mind.

Bartley has made 40 appearances across the board this season, but he was an unused substitute in two of West Brom’s last five Championship games and was left out of the matchday squad on the final day. Madeley also believes the 30-year-old’s wages could push West Brom to move him on, so there’s plenty of motivation for Bruce to seek a sale.

In other news, West Bromwich Albion could make £1.5m if Cedric Kipre is sold this summer
