Big things were expected of Alex Mowatt when he joined West Bromwich Albion last summer, but the 27-year-old hasn’t had the best debut season.

Mowatt had a bright start to life at the Hawthorns, scoring two goals with one assist from midfield in his first four Championship outings, but he contributed only three more goals from the 30 games that followed and was sidelined for the last few matches.

Steve Bruce needs to strengthen the midfield due to West Brom’s lack of depth, but he also might want an upgrade on Mowatt who could be more consistent creatively.

Steve Madeley of The Athletic says Joe Rothwell is that player. The 27-year-old is coming off the back of a productive campaign at Blackburn Rovers, scoring three goals with 10 assists from 41 Championship games, outperforming Mowatt in midfield.

Rothwell has created 68 chances to Mowatt’s 46, had 52 successful dribbles to his 20 and has completed a higher percentage of passes (81.4%) than his 75.9%.

And with Rothwell being out contract in the coming weeks, he’d be an affordable option for West Brom. The Baggies need midfielders and could improve a problem area without breaking the bank, so why not plump for the Blackburn man?

In other news, Tom Lawrence would be good signing for West Brom
