Sam Johnstone opted against signing a new deal at West Bromwich Albion as he wants to play in the Premier League next season, but the 29-year-old recently lost a suitor in Tottenham Hotspur, so his next destination is still up in the air.

Johnstone wanted out of West Brom last summer after impressing in the Premier League despite Albion’s relegation, but West Ham United failed to match his asking price, so he stayed in the Midlands.

But with one year remaining on his contract, Johnstone wasn’t going to extend his stay beyond 2022, meaning West Brom would lose him for free at the end of the season. This is where we are now, but what’s the latest on his situation?

The England international hasn’t left West Brom just yet – he’s contracted until June 30. Johnstone hasn’t played since Steve Bruce revealed in mid-April that he was going to leave over the summer, but he was still training with the first-team as normal.

The last mention of Johnstone on West Brom’s official website came on May 9 in an article about Alex Palmer challenging for his shirt. The 29-year-old hasn’t posted on his Instagram account for two months either, so he’s still on the books at the Hawthorns for now.

West Brom released their retained list on May 27 last year, so it could be just a few days until confirmation comes of his exit. As for where he could go next, Newcastle United, West Ham, Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion are reportedly keen but all have established first-choice goalkeepers, so Johnstone may not be a regular if he joins one of the quartet.
