Steve Bruce said earlier this summer that he wants to play with conventional fullbacks next season and noted how Conor Townsend and Darnell Furlong don’t have a natural option who can deputise in their place, so West Brom were expected to sign a left-back and right-back before the new campaign.

The Baggies have since been linked with Ryan Nyambe, Nathan Byrne and Moses Odubajo, but Joseph Masi of the Express and Star says Luton Town’s James Bree is the latest name on their radar.

Read West Brom have previously suggested the Baggies should sign Bree as he’s one of the best right-backs in the Championship and will soon be available on a free transfer, but statistics show he’s actually a better player than Furlong too.

Bree scored more goals (1 – 0), made more assists (6 – 3), had more tackles per game (1.5 – 1.4), created more chances (1.5 – 1.2) and whipped in more accurate crosses per game (2 – 0.8) than West Brom’s 26-year-old, so he’d be a great addition to the squad.

Albion hope to challenge for promotion next season, so they should be able to convince Bree to the Hawthorns.

In other news, there are five West Brom players with uncertain futures as their contracts are up in 2023
