Zac Ashworth featured in West Bromwich Albion’s last two games of the season and was expected to kick on this summer, but the 19-year-old has barely got a look-in during pre-season.

Ashworth came off the bench in Albion’s opening friendly but hasn’t made another appearance, so it’s hard to see him being in the first-team this coming campaign. Steve Bruce has already loaned out Josh Griffiths, Caleb Taylor and Quevin Castro this season, so could he send Ashworth out too?

The Welsh U21 international played for 45 minutes in West Brom’s 2-1 win over Leyton Orient on July 4, replacing Conor Townsend at the restart. He was an unused substitute in the Baggies’ 2-0 defeat to Stevenage on July 9 as Townsend played a full 90 minutes.

Ashworth didn’t feature in Albion’s 3-0 win over Northampton Town on July 13 and their 1-1 draw with Crewe Alexandra on July 16. He was an unused substitute in the 3-0 win over Oxford United on July 19 and was an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over Hertha Berlin on July 23.

The 19-year-old has made 28 appearances for West Brom’s U18s, 21 appearances for the U23s and three for the first-team. Bruce does need cover for Townsend beyond using Adam Reach or Darnell Furlong in a makeshift role, but it’s probably best Ashworth is loaned out.

In other news, Steve Bruce must sign replacement for Caleb Taylor
