West Bromwich Albion suffered a transfer blow in their pursuit of Hamza Choudhury with Watford signing him on a season-long loan from Leicester City, but Steve Bruce won’t be too disappointed as he has enough depth in his position.

The Baggies manager has Okay Yokuslu, Jayson Molumby and Jake Livermore who can occupy the defensive-midfield role, so it’s not the end of the world if Choudhury goes elsewhere. The problem is having enough different ball-playing partners for the aforementioned trio, however.

Bruce only has John Swift and Alex Mowatt to choose from in that role, so he could do with another midfielder to provide creativity. West Brom are expected to scour the loan market for new recruits, but it remains to be seen who is on their radar.

The Baggies did well to sign Swift as an upgrade on Romaine Sawyers this summer, and they did well to bring back Okay Yokuslu, but having five midfielders in a three-midfielder system is risky in a 46-game season. Taylor Gardner-Hickman is a makeshift option, but Bruce prefers him at right-back.

Bruce doesn’t need Choudhury specifically but will need depth in the engine room for Swift and Mowatt, especially with the latter being linked with a move away.
